Utensils: letting bakers do things

On its own, an oven can only write. It can't open a web page, check today's date or do exact sums; it guesses. Utensils (also called tools) give your bakers hands: small, safe abilities they may use while answering.

What utensils do

You choose a baker's utensils in step 5 of the baker wizardbaker wizard. GrannyBakes has seven:

  • Web page reader reads the text of a public web page.
  • Read a file and Save a file work with files in your Kitchen folder.
  • Make it WebP shrinks a picture into the small WebP format.
  • What time is it, Calculator and Count words give exact answers instead of guesses.

The oven decides when to use a utensil. You see each use under the answer, with what went in and what came out.

Safe by design

Every utensil has a badge: safe ones stay inside GrannyBakes and your Kitchen folder, careful ones reach outside, like reading a public web page, and asks first ones change something, like saving a file. Before an "asks first" utensil runs, the chat shows an approval card: Allow, Deny, or Always allow for this baker. Nothing happens until you answer. Utensils also cost a little: the oven reads the utensil's results as input tokens.

The Kitchen folder

File utensils can only reach one folder, the Kitchen folder. A baker can't look anywhere else on your PC, even if someone asks it to. You can change the folder in SettingsSettings.

Granny's rule of thumb: give a baker only the utensils its job needs, the way you'd hand an apprentice only the knives they need.
